What Is CBD Oil For Cats? Is it Safe and Effective?

Sharing Is Caring ♥ Thank You!

Most of us alive today have become acquainted with hearing of this mysterious “CBD oil.” Some tout it as the miracle cure-all for nearly everything that ails us. But what is CBD oil for cats? Is it even safe to give our favorite furchildren?

While it may not be the answer to every condition; it does have some pretty impressive benefits.

Pull up a comfortable seat, call over your beloved pet, and let’s chat about how CBD oil can improve the quality of your lives together.

What is cbd oil for cats? Is it safe and does it work?

There’s no doubt your vet should always be your first port of call if you feel there is something wrong with your cat.

Symptoms of sudden pain, distress, or behaving out of character need immediate medical attention instead of natural remedies. We all know that!

But if your feline (or pup) have been diagnosed with a long-term health condition; or are out of sorts and there is no single cause you can put your finger on, then it may well be worth considering using CBD oil.

What is CBD Oil for cats?

CBD is the simpler abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is one of the many compounds found in hemp.

As with the use of CBD oil in humans, cannabidiol derived from hemp is an entirely natural product that has no psychoactive effects – in other words, it won’t get your pet ‘high’.

A solvent such as olive oil or alcohol is simply passed through the hemp plant to absorb the cannabinoids and the resulting oil is guaranteed non-toxic, entirely natural, and 100% safe to administer to your pet.

You might be thinking, “Okay, that’s great, but how does this even work?

I’m glad you asked! All mammals have what is referred to as the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Studying the ECS is fascinating because it plays a critical role in everything from sleep, chronic pain, inflammation, stress, and nerve function, just to name a few.

It appears that CBD prevents the breakdown of these endocannabinoids. This, in turn, means a more balanced, stable, and less stressed body.

There is still a lot we don’t understand. More research is currently underway to determine exactly how CBD affects the endocannabinoid system, particularly in cats.

It is important to note that some studies suggest a significant difference between how cats and dogs absorb and eliminate CBD.

This means high quality CBD meant for pets and proper dosages are highly important considerations.

Never forget that, just like us, our cats are individuals. Side effects with CBD treatment are rare but that does not make them impossible!

Is CBD Oil Safe And Effective In Cats?

Now that we’ve answered the question, “What is CBD oil for cats?“, let’s take a look at some reasons why we’d even consider trying it!

While there are currently no research studies showing definitively how well CBD works in kitties, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that the best CBD oil for cats can help manage a range of conditions.

Does your four-legged best friend suffer from any of these conditions?

  • Anxiety
  • Chronic stress
  • Chronic pain
  • Age-related mobility
  • Inflammation/arthritis
  • Mood disorders
  • Seizures
  • Undergoing cancer treatments
  • Dull, dry skin and fur

If you’ve answered “yesto any of these, a high quality CBD oil for cats might be worth looking into.

Just like so many of you, I’ve personally witnessed the power of CBD oil in my own life. In our home, we believe in the healing power of so many plants. They are powerful medicine.

Important note: Many added ingredients in human CBD products are toxic for cats.

Ingredients such as coconut oil can be deadly for kitties. Please know what’s in your CBD oil and research if it’s safe for cats.

CBD oils created specifically for pets with only pure ingredients help keep your cat safe and give you peace of mind.

It must also be stressed that CBD oil will not cure a particular illness. However, all indications are that it is a product that has unique health and healing qualities and has been used successfully by pet owners worldwide to manage and ease symptoms caused by a range of difficult conditions.

As pet parents, it’s a joy to see the quality of our pet’s lives improve, isn’t it?

How Do I Administer CBD Oil To My Pet?

Most importantly, always ensure you buy CBD oil from a reputable supplier, whether you’re intending to take it yourself or treat your feline with it.

Ensure that the product is derived from hemp plants and contains no harmful ingredients. CBD oil manufactured for pets generally comes in a liquid form, often known as a tincture.

The bottle should include a dropper, allowing you to regulate the dosage accurately. Simply add the required number of droplets to your cat’s food on a daily basis; or administer it orally if your cat is cooperative.

You can also consider pet-specific products, like CBD dog treats and CBD cat food.

As with all changes to a cat’s diet, it’s best to introduce CBD oil gradually, starting off with less than the recommended dosage and building that up over a number of days.

This allows your cat’s system to adjust to the new substance while also offering you a chance to begin to see changes in their condition and monitor any concerns.

  1. I say if it works then use it. You’ve done your research and that makes it easier for folks like me to know the ups and downs.

Have a fabulous day and week, Holly. ♥

    1. Amen! I agree with you Sandee. If something is safe and effective – why not give it an honest try? It may not work in every case, but if it does work in yours, great! That’s the beauty of individuality isn’t it?

Sending more love your way dear friend. Have a fabulous day and week ahead too! ♥

  2. Ooo this is such a good topic to cover! A fellow blogger told me, after one of my posts on CBD, that he used to give it to his old dog years ago when he was poorly and it seemed to help make him more comfortable. It’s interesting there’s a difference between how cats & dogs absorb and eliminate CBD. Definitely good to know and to be very mindful of the dosage, which will always vary between each kittykat because they’re all unique balls of fur. Good tip on building the dosage up gradually so they can get used to it and you can check for how they tolerate it.

I’d absolutely consider CBD for Virgil. As you say, it’s always the vet first for any issues but when you want something to help a condition in the short or longer term – whether it’s mental health or illness or pain – something like this could be a more natural alternative and maybe even a game-changer for some pets. It’s always good to have the option. Fab post, Holly! xx

Aw! What a sweet story you shared about the guy who gave CBD to his ill pup. I’m so glad it made a difference for him! It hurts us, as “pawrents” when we see our babies suffering and don’t know what to do or can’t help them in the way we’d like. It kills our hearts, doesn’t it?

I agree with you completely; if we consider the right dosages and the uniqueness of each pet, why not give it a try? If it helps, that’s amazing! Having the option, just like you suggested, is where the real blessing is.

Lotsa love headed your way my friend. I hope you are having an amazing day! ♥ You deserve it!
